GE2020 (4) – Polling day and results

9 days of campaign passed in a whiz. During the campaign period, there were a lot of instance of crowd more than 5 or even more than 20 people, but fortunately, the COVID-19 cases didn’t jump up too much. On my GRC wise, I did went out a few times around my neighborhood, I didn’t managed to meet up with any of the PAP candidates from Jurong JRC. Presumably they might be so confident in winning the GRC that walking around might not be necessary. After all, the danger of losing comes from the nearby west coast GRC, they might be just going there to help canvass for votes. On the TV, I do see Mr. Tharman going to Bukit batok to help Mr. Muralli.

On the other hand, I managed to meet The RDU candidates at Jurong west. They have been very hardworking these few days going around neighborhood, from Bukit batok, jurong west, Taman jurong and to clemeti. Compared to the previous opponent that comes before, 2015 (SingFirst) and 2011 (NSP), they are indeed more credible and sincere. But then, the team is simply too new to give any threat to Mr Tharman and his team. at the end of the nine day campaign, none of the candidates came to knock on my door. there's only once that family members of Mr tharman came instead, but we didn;t say anything.

On the day of polling, In order to reduce crowding on the polling station, everyone have been given different specific timing to go for voting. My mother considered as the elderly, got the morning slot, between 10am-12pm. I make a glimpse on the voting ground around 0930, and the place is already crowded with people queuing it. There were news (or rumors) that the pen chop given on the voting ground wasn’t functioning well, I decide to bring my pen along. When I reached the usual voting place (below HDB) where I have voted for the past 2 elections, there were dozens of people queueing up for voting. Due to the safe distancing, the queue were pretty long (around 200M) I think. I waited for 15 minutes before entering the place to vote. I was also given a compulsory one time gloves (which is a waste) to use. Finally, I marked on the party I wanted, drop the vote into the ballet box and left.

After dinner, I just stayed at home to watch the results of GE2020. Due to large numbers of people queueing in some polling stations, the ELD surprisingly extend the voting time to 10pm.According to the media, safe distancing and wearing of gloves are few of the main reasons for these mess-up. In some stations, compulsory use of gloves were removed to speed up the voting process

And finally, the sampling results were out around 12 midnight. In most of the seats, PAP has seen its votes shares dipped significantly. It’s very disappointing that the Opposition could not win the prized east Coast and West coast GRC, neither could Dr Chee and Dr Tambyah succeed in Bukit batok and Bukit panjang. However, there are still good news for the workers party. Besides holding on the aljunied and hougang, they managed to win the 4 seats Seng kang GRC, upsetting 3 ministers in the process. With this, they managed to win 10 seats (historical since independence of Singapore). 2 NCMP seats went to PSP too.

Going down the road, with PAP holding on the super majority in parliament, I don’t see any major changes in government policies. Mr. Heng should be in line to succeed the prime minister post in these one or two years, although I believe he would still have a tougher battle to fight at east coast next coming election. Just hope that the government could do more to reduce the living cost in Singapore, do another downward review on the minister’s salaries, and be more prudent in expensive government projects, so that Singapore can still be liveable for years to come

Election aside, time for us to move again as Singaporeans. Since today, COVID 19 cases around the world had exceeded 14Million and death toll coming to 600K. The future would have to be tougher before it gets better. Everyone need to stand behind the government effort to fight the virus, practice safe distancing and keep safe. Beside these efforts, I do wish more people taking up vegetarian and eat less meat, it would definitely be beneficial to the world.

GE2020 (3) – Days leading to Polling days

The 9 days election of election campaign were pretty smooth. Since there weren’t any physical campaigning, most activities were have to be online. Although Candidates are allowed to do house visits, the number of Candidates plus volunteers cannot exceed 5 people for each group, and different groups are not allowed to mix together, so as to reduce the chances of cross infection. Although the idea is good, it is simply not practical. Candidates going around the neighborhood indeed attract many attentions, either the public supporters of the media. At any people, it seems that they are more than 10s of people mingling together, and even at times (at yishun), there were both supporters (PAP and PSP) shouting slogans. Are they not worried anyone might get covid 19?? It’s really the worst of the time to have elections.

As usual, the slogan used by the ruling party centered about COVID-19, jobs and jobs. Most opposition slogan centered on accountability, diverse voice in parliament and preventing a 2/3 majority by PAP. Unfortunately due to COVID 19, the mistake of PAP (or lack of 20/20 foresight of the ruling party was seldom addressed in most of time). Example of the PMDs, shared bicycle scheme was not even mentioned by any candidates, presume most Singaporeans might have overlook on the matter.

One of the main issue in debate by the SDP and PAP center around the future projection of 10M population. The 10M figure was initially bought up the ex-planner Mr. Liu on 2014 on the population coming 2100. This figure was repeated by Mr. Heng on 2019 on a University forum and he “endorsed “on the figures (or not??). SDP relied on the reports on straits times (which many believe 10M figure would come earlier than latter) to come out with the 4Y1N policy campaign. Finally, the government rejected the 10M saying that Singapore would never had 6.9M, not to mentioned 10M. When I review the forum on YouTube, I realized that Mr. Heng didn’t exactly say yes, neither has he say no. these are exactly the reasons why the general public or even the national papers got misleaded. Looking ahead, as Dr Chee says “ Trust is not what you say, is what you do”. While PAP strongly denies the 6.9M population, its action seems otherwise. Looking around Singapore, there are so many lands being cleared, forest disappeared to give way for thousands of flats to be built. MRT tracks and station will be increased tremendously by 2030. We are worried that PAP might do a policy U-turn (or policy shift) in the days ahead, saying Singapore need more than 7M?

On the prevention of COVID 19 early Feb, When one of the first cases appears in Singapore and particularly in one of the dormitories. This was the time, when the virus had spread throughout china and many lives lost. Experts had mentioned the importance of mask, but in Singapore, our government taking the WHO recommendation rejected the advice on compulsory use of the mask when going out. All the ministers acting like medical experts telling people NOT to wear mask unless sick. The MOM even to the extent threaten employers to prevent them in sending their workers to hospital for COVID test. All this mistakes (or lack of 20/20 foresight ) leads to a massive jump in COVID figures by early Apr. Partly due to these mistakes , Singapore have to implement a 2 months lockdown (circuit Breaker) and resulted in economy is Singapore stalled , many companies risking folding up and workers losing their jobs. In the end, government had to spend near to 100Billion (mostly from the reserves) in helping Singaporeans tide over the situation. Looking backwards, if the government had done a good job recommending mask instead, will we have saved all this 100B worth of nation monies? Even when today, the cases of COVID 19 hits 45K (almost 5 times compared to Malaysia) our government leaders still refused to admit to their mistakes, and presumably that they done a good job

Talking about the NCMP scheme, which allows up to 12 best losers from the opposition in case PAP gets a clean sweep of parliament seats in the house. Obviously this is a tactic used by the PAP to discourage people from voting the opposition. From my point of view, NCMP is not necessary as they are not elected by the residents.

In regards to my friends on the election fever, I couldn’t meet up with any of them for any election discussion. From WhatsApp, many of my friends were rather political neutral and not willing to discuss on their political stance, presumably that election had nothing to with their lives. They seems to indicate on voting for status quo (voting PAP as the government has given lots of money since 2020. Instead of quarrelling with them, I choose to keep quiet for a while. After all, everyone has only 1 vote. That’s very little thing I can do if the majority loves PAP (Pay and Pay), and all the increment in cost from 2016-2018.

GE2020 (2) – Nomination day

Seven days has passed on since the dissolution of the parliament on 23rd Jun. Many parties are working hard on preparing for the elections. My mother didn’t seem very interested in the coming election, saying that whether who wins the elections, we still has to work to earn a living. Although this is true at a certain extent, but bad policy from a poor government could spell disaster for our future lives.

There are 12 opposition parties in Singapore, including the newest red dot United (RDU) contesting for 93 seats. Days leading up to nomination days has shown some dramatic events. One day after the dissolution of the house, news of LKY’s son, Lee Hsian Yang joining the opposition party (PSP) shook the world. Workers party took a surprising conservative tactic, contesting only 21 seats. PSP also contested only in 24 seats. Looking at these, a change of government in this election is almost impossible.

The previous party (singfirst) that had come to jurong on the 2015 election has surprisingly self-disbanded few days before the nomination day. PSP didn’t want to contest in jurong and SDP is not coming either, probably because there was a powerful mr Tharman here, and there are no chance of winning , but fortunately , the new RDU party has decided to come to jurong to challenge Tharman and give jurong residents a chance to vote. I never believe RDU would ever win, but I hope they could get some pretty good results (30 percent)

In regards to the famous Ivan Lim saga, PAP has introduced Ivan as a potential new PAP candidate for the election, posing to be fielded in my GRC (Jurong). Within hours of the introduction, many negative comment appear on the Facebook from either his school mates, army mates or work colleagues and most comments rallied about his elitist and non-compassionate behavior. In spite of all the denial and reasons he give, the negative comments only serve to grow more. At the end of the day, he has to withdraw his candidacy. What lesson can we learn from such a saga? Although all the allegations cannot be independently verified for now, it tell us a valuable attitude a good candidate should possess and that’s is being humble. As for my personal opinion, Ivan should have eaten the humble pie and apologies for all the allegations. Since all the allegations come from his ex-classmates or friends, he could have just called them to patch up, and things won’t get to be so bad. After all, if he stands in Jurong, 99.99 % chances he will be MP, and if he isn’t humble enough, many jurong residents might have to repent for the next 5 years

On the nomination day, all the process were very smooth. All the constituency were being contested, no walkovers. The opposition surprising kept 3 corners to the minimum ( only 1 GRC and 1 SMC has 3 corner fights ), that’s a good thing , I think. On the sad part, LHY didn’t participate in the election as I hope. His participation would have increased the chances of winning at tanjong pagar and denying CCS his parliament seat. On the surprising part, Mr. Heng turn up to contest in the WP strong ward of East Coast GRC. This is definitely a gamble for Mr. Heng as the future PM in waiting and it might be good for him if he is able to win the toughest battle. But if he loses in east coast (and I hope he lose), PAP will have to source for a new PM. This will be the most hotly contested seats in the GE2020

Looking forward, since there were no physical rally this time round, I should spent most of the night watch e-rally at home. Results wise, I hope the opposition could pull a good results in all of the WP contested wards (21 seats), west coast and tanjong pagar (10 seats), 2 seats from SDP (bukit batok and Bukit panjang) and one from potong pasir.
